Sangha Meditation Workshop

“My name is Andrea Sangiacomo, I’m 36, and I’m originally from Italy (Genova). Since almost 10 years, I live and work in Groningen where I teach at the Faculty of Philosophy. I came to Buddhist meditation in 2018 , during a particularly stressful period of my life. Since I started practicing, I hardly had a day without a sitting. living at Buddhist monasteries in the Thai Forest tradition. I started running meditation workshops myself in 2019 for philosophy students, and teaching ancient Buddhist philosophy at the university in 2021.
Today there are several ways in which Buddhist meditation is branded and sometimes commercialized. In its fundamentals, however, it remains a very flexible and open approach, mainly aimed at cultivating positive qualities, training attention, understanding how we construct our experiences, and how we might do that better. I’m committed to make this practice accessible in a non-sectarian setting, for those interested or even just curious, from absolute beginners to people who already have some meditation experience.
Each meeting will take approximately 1h15′. We begin with a short explanation of relevant aspects of meditation, and we then try to put them into practice in a guided 30′ session. The rest of the time will be left for conversations, exchanges, questions, and sharing.
For those who wants to deepen the theoretical implications behind meditation practice, or get more familiar with some of the foundational texts in the Buddhist tradition, I published a book in open access, which covers some of the topics that will also be touched upon during the workshop: https://doi.org/10.21827/618a51bdd6187. We meet every Wednesday at the Sangha Café in Mandira (studio 2), 19:00-20:15.
The workshop is offered for free. Nevertheless, donations to the Sangha Café will be much appreciated and will contribute to make this initiative more sustainable.
After the meditation session you are welcome to join the cafe and eat some nice vegan food with the community and enjoy what Sangha Café has to offer!
